Yamato BBQ大和烧肉 is a Japanese barbecue restaurant nestled in the heart of Madrid’s Centro district, offering a hands-on grilling experience with a distinctly Japanese flair. The long communal tables and tabletop grills invite groups and solo diners alike to engage directly with their meal, making it an interactive spot rather than the typical sit-and-wait restaurant. It’s the kind of place you visit when you want more than just a quick bite — the ritual of grilling your own meat at a relaxed pace shapes the experience.

The menu clearly leans into premium cuts and Japanese-inspired barbecue classics. Items like the Kobe beef, sirloin cubes, and skirt steak highlight a focus on quality meat, while side dishes such as truffle rice and kimchi udon add rich contrasts to the grilled flavors. Vegetables like the Hokkaido-style okra and mixed greens get noticeable praise, creating balanced plates that don’t entirely revolve around meat. Portions are typically generous, which makes sharing a good option, especially if you’d rather sample a variety of dishes.

Atmospherically, Yamato BBQ manages a warm, casual vibe with attentive service — staff are quick to assist, especially since grilling your own food can sometimes feel daunting for first-timers. The lighting is soft and comfortable, fitting a dinner that can easily stretch across a conversation. Locals seem to appreciate it as a change from Madrid’s usual tapas culture, seeking something more interactive and with a clear nod to authentic Japanese techniques.

This spot appeals particularly to those who enjoy social dining, meat lovers curious about Japanese barbecue styles, or visitors wanting a break from the standard Spanish offerings around Plaza de la Victoria. Even solo diners find it welcoming, although smaller appetites might want to pace themselves due to the sizable servings. Early to mid-evenings on weekdays can be quieter, making it a good time to explore the menu without a rush.

Finishing the meal with their house plum liquor adds a distinctive touch — a small gesture that rounds out the experience with a local hospitality feel. Overall, Yamato BBQ大和烧肉 is a grounded, meat-centric destination for those open to a hands-on dining style in central Madrid.

Great food, fast service, warm hospitality. Plum liquor at the end on the house. I was alone so the portions were a bit too big for me. Especially the sake which must be like 300 cc. I couldn’t finish it. The meats were delicious but the vegetable platter deserves special applause. All good. A place to go when you want something other than tapas.

This place is just an absolute "WOW". I was out looking for paella or Argentinan Steak and as we went from restaurant to restaurant, we were getting hungry and upset because it was either fully booked on a Wednesday night or it was way too expensive on the menu. This place did NOT disappoint. I cannot believe that the restaurant was not fully booked. The ratings on here even says it all! The steak tartar is my favorite! It was so delightful and much better tasting to me than the usual European made steak tartars. [Look at the pictures]. On the grill, my favorite was the skirt steak! Cheaper cut and so juicy and flavourful. I don't find myself give 5 stars all the way, but this was great because service was excellent too!!!

Genuinely such an amazing find! I’ve been travelling for so two months and missed Japanese BBQ from my home and this was a perfect way to enjoy it :) All the meats are so delicious & all of the staff who work here are amazing. I cannot emphasise enough how good the service here is!! We were greeted by the nicest woman when we accidentally came in too early but she accommodated us and was so kind

Absolutely top tier experience. Allowed full power cooking (so many turn it down). The wagyu was elite, and the vegetables well prepared and fresh. Good sake selection, although only one by the glass. Incredibly enjoyable experience overall. Thank you.
